JC open houses: see before you choose.

Open houses are the best way to get a real feel for a junior college before you rank it. Here is when they happen, how to make the most of a visit, and the questions worth asking, with the most recent cycle for reference.

JC open houses in Singapore take place in mid January, in the days after the GCE O Level results are released and just before the Joint Admissions Exercise. Most junior colleges open their campuses for a few hours so prospective students can meet teachers, see the subjects and CCAs, and get a feel for the culture before they rank their choices. Dates for each cycle are usually announced around December.

How to prepare for a JC open house

An open house is a short window, so go in with a plan. A little preparation turns a pleasant walk around into a real basis for your decision.

Before you go

  • Shortlist two or three colleges using the cut-off points and the subjects you want.
  • Check the date and times, and plan to visit more than one if they fall on different days.
  • Write down the questions that matter to you, on subjects, CCAs and support.

Questions worth asking

  • Which subject combinations do you offer, and are any subject specific tests required?
  • What special or talent programmes are available, and how do you get in?
  • What does academic support look like for students who need it?
  • What is the culture and CCA scene actually like day to day?

What to look for

  • Whether the students seem like people you would settle in with.
  • The distance and commute from home, realistically, for two years.
  • How the teachers talk about learning, not just results.

Yes, if you can. An open house is the best way to get a real feel for a college's subjects, support and culture before you rank it. Shortlist a few colleges using the cut-off points first, then visit to compare.

Ask about the subject combinations offered and any selection tests, the special or talent programmes, the academic support for students who need it, and what the culture and CCAs are like day to day. Also weigh the commute from home.
