Twenty prelim essay questions, dissected and written up, in one focused day.
The Essence Workshop is Mr Eugene Toh's annual one-day essay masterclass. He handpicks 20 essay questions from this year's JC prelim papers across Singapore, then walks through how to dissect each one, structure a clear answer, and write the Level 3 evaluations that move essays into distinction territory. Around 200 students take it every year as their focused essay prep before the A Levels, live on Zoom or on the recordings.

We would rather show you students than quote you a percentage. Real, verifiable grade jumps from students who sharpened their essays with ETG, in their own words.
"As long as you put in the effort you improve tremendously, as I did, from a consistent E to my first A."
Glynis Lim · Verified review"My results jumped by 4 grades from the mid years to the actual A Levels, once I was finally writing essays instead of just reading about them."
Darrion Yio · Verified review"Mr Toh's analysis of the likely questions is usually spot on, and I improved from a C or D grade to an A."
Zack Goh · Verified review"Mr Toh helped me pull my H2 econs grade from a consistent U in JC to an A at the A Levels."
Michelle Tan · Verified review"He helped me jump from Ds and Es to an A for A Levels. Very understanding and patient, super caring too."
Jamie Ng · Verified review"I really benefitted from the structured essay practice and feedback. Went from a D to an A grade student."
Monica Lee · Verified reviewIndividual results, in the students' own words, not typical. SEAB sets the paper, not us. Read 500+ verified reviews →
If staring at an essay question and not knowing where to begin feels familiar, that is not a verdict on your ability. It usually means you have not yet had enough of the right exposure, the right practice, and someone showing you exactly how a top essay is built. All three are learnable, and a single focused day is enough to shift them.
That is what the Essence Workshop is for. In one day you see twenty real prelim essay questions dissected from the question stem to the finished argument, you learn the structure and the evaluation moves that score, and you walk out with the model answers to revise from.
It is not about memorising model essays. It is about learning to think like an economist and write like one, so that whatever question appears, you know how to take it apart and answer it well.
The workshop is built around three things that move essay grades fast, all in one focused day.
Most students have not written 20 full essays all year. Twenty carefully chosen questions across all major Micro and Macro topics give you that exposure in one day.
You learn how to dissect what a question is really asking, plan with clarity, write strong Level 3 evaluations, and handle unconventional questions with confidence.
The questions are handpicked from this year's JC prelim papers and the themes most likely to matter at the A Levels, not picked at random.
Want to know if the workshop suits where you are? Tell us your school and grade, no pressure.
Attend live on Zoom or watch the recordings, which open within 24 hours and stay available until your A Levels end.
The questions are school-set prelim questions from across Singapore, chosen for the themes most likely to matter. In recent years some have closely resembled what then appeared at the A Levels. We credit the schools for setting such insightful prelims. This is careful pattern reading, not prophecy, the resemblance is in the concept rather than the exact wording, the schools set the prelims and SEAB sets the A Level paper.

The Essence Workshop is led personally by Mr Eugene Toh, ETG's founder and lead economics tutor, who wrote the H1 and H2 Economics TYS answer keys published by SAP and sold at Popular, and the 50 Model Essays series published by Shing Lee. He holds a B.A. in Economics from NUS and an M.Sc. in Applied Economics from SMU.
He has taught economics since 2007, works with around 200 students a year, and has been featured in the local press. When you study a model essay here, you are learning from the person who wrote the answer key students across Singapore reference.
