Essay writing

The questions are school-set prelim questions from across Singapore, chosen for the themes most likely to matter. In recent years some have closely resembled what then appeared at the A Levels. We credit the schools for setting such insightful prelims. This is careful pattern reading, not prophecy, the resemblance is in the concept rather than the exact wording, the schools set the prelims and SEAB sets the A Level paper.

2025, the workshop question beside the A Level question

Price discrimination Three of the 2025 workshop essays, from the NJC, RI and EJC prelims, drilled price discrimination and a firm's pricing decisions. The 2025 H2 Paper 2 Essay 1 asked exactly that: why a firm can charge different prices to different groups of consumers, and whether the gains outweigh the losses.

The shut-down decision The NJC prelim essay in the workshop asked when a profit-maximising firm shuts down or expands, based on its costs and revenue. The 2025 H2 Paper 2 Essay 2 turned on the same call, whether a rise in egg prices would push a food producer to shut down.

Elasticity and consumer spending The TJC prelim essay worked how an elasticity-driven price change affects total spending on a good and its substitute. The 2025 H2 Paper 2 Essay 2 asked how a rise in egg prices affects household expenditure and consumer surplus, the same elasticity and expenditure reasoning.

Protectionism and tariffs The RI prelim essay on tariffs, welfare loss and the United States versus Singapore approach to globalisation mirrored the 2025 H2 Paper 2 Essay 4: how removing an import tariff redistributes welfare, and the unintended consequences of protectionism for large economies.

Inclusive growth and inequality Workshop essays from the RI, HCI and DHS prelims worked income inequality and inclusive growth. The 2025 H2 Paper 2 Essay 5 asked whether more generous transfer payments are the most appropriate route to inclusive growth in Singapore.

Exchange rates and inflation Workshop essays from the RVHS, MI and JPJC prelims covered MAS tightening, the exchange-rate policy tool and a currency depreciation. The 2025 H2 Paper 2 Essay 6 asked how a depreciation causes demand-pull and cost-push inflation, and whether it is the best way to improve the balance of trade.

2024, the prelim question beside the A Level question

Firms and strategy A 2023 TJC prelim on whether product differentiation is the best strategy to raise market share, against the 2024 H2 Paper 1 question on whether price competition is the best way for supermarkets to raise revenue. The same underlying concept, firms' price and non-price strategies.

Exchange rates A 2024 JPJC prelim on the demand and supply factors behind a currency's depreciation, against the 2024 H2 Paper 1 question on why the Chinese yuan appreciated. The same concept, factors moving an exchange rate.

Standard of living A 2024 YIJC prelim on real GDP per capita and standard of living, against the 2024 H2 Paper 2 question on why measures of living standards look beyond the material. Overlapping ground, measuring standard of living.

Who leads it

Led by the economics tutor who wrote the answer key.

The Essence Workshop is led personally by Mr Eugene Toh, ETG's founder and lead economics tutor, who wrote the H1 and H2 Economics TYS answer keys published by SAP and sold at Popular, and the 50 Model Essays series published by Shing Lee. He holds a B.A. in Economics from NUS and an M.Sc. in Applied Economics from SMU.
