Non material standard of living
Definition. The non material standard of living refers to aspects of welfare that are not measured by the quantity of goods and services consumed, such as life expectancy, health, education, leisure time, environmental quality, and political freedom. It captures the quality rather than the quantity of life.
It complements the material standard of living when assessing overall welfare, because higher national income may be accompanied by pollution or stress that lower the non material dimension of wellbeing.
