Human Development Index

Definition. The Human Development Index is a composite measure of development that combines indicators of health, education, and income into a single value between zero and one. It captures dimensions of wellbeing beyond output alone, recognising that the standard of living depends on more than national income.

It is built from life expectancy at birth, years of schooling, and Gross National Income per capita, providing a broader picture of living standards than income measures used alone.

This term belongs to Standard of Living in A Level Economics. Read the full chapter for the diagrams, worked examples and exam technique.
