Inside the chapter

Five things you should be able to do by the last page.

The chapter opens on a question rather than a definition: can a machine be an artist, and if its work one day fools us completely, is anything still missing? It then works the argument out in the open, weighing the evidence by its quality and showing you the essay move at the end rather than describing it.

01

Explain in your own words what generative AI actually does when it creates something.

02

Tell apart two claims that sound alike: that one AI made work was bad, and that AI made work must always be bad.

03

Retell the Trace Project case with enough context to use it on either side of an essay.

04

Weigh evidence by its quality: a direct quotation, a journalist's paraphrase and an online pile on do not carry equal weight.

05

Open an essay by turning a yes or no question into a sharper one, and carry that sharper question through to your conclusion.

And one full worked essay

The scaffold, from wording to written answer.

The essay bound into the PDF is worked the way all eight in the booklet are worked. First the wording is taken apart, word by word, with the assumptions the question is hiding brought out into the open. Then the stand. Then the paragraph plan, each paragraph with the claim it makes and the evidence it rests on. Then the model essay itself, written out in full.

The point is not to hand you an answer to memorise. It is to show you the sequence, so you can run it yourself on a question you have never seen.

What signing up means

Plainly, so there is no surprise.

You give us an email address, and the PDF downloads straight away, with no login and no payment. You also join the GP mailing list, which is where the GP team sends tips, worked notes and the current affairs most worth carrying into a paper. It goes out when there is something worth sending, rather than to a fixed schedule. Every email carries an unsubscribe link and one click ends it.

Everything in the mesh below is already free on this site with no form at all, so if you would rather not join the list, start there instead.
