What A-Level GP actually asks

Data-led analysis of a decade of A-Level GP papers: which themes recur, how questions are framed, and what examiners reward.

The data · 2016 to 2025

Which themes come up, and how often

Across the last 9 A-Level GP essay papers (the 116 questions of 2016 to 2025, classified by ETG), the questions cluster into eight themes. Society and culture dominates; science and technology and the arts recur every single year; the environment and media appear in smaller but rising numbers. Roughly 47 in 116 questions are calibration questions (how far / to what extent) and 24 are open Discuss prompts, which is why we teach a calibrated, two-option approach rather than a flat yes or no.

What a recurring theme looks like once it is written up.

Reading which themes recur is the first half. The second is having a chapter on each one that carries the evidence, the counter arguments and the past year questions it answers. These are chapter openers and a contents page from the current books.
