GP Essay Skills, in ten steps

A complete Paper 1 writing curriculum, ordered from how the essay is marked to how to finish one under time. Work through it in sequence, or open any step on its own. Every step is built from the exam backwards and shows you the move, not just the rule.

The A-Level GP essay is not a content test. There is no syllabus to memorise, so the marks go to a set of writing moves: reading what the question is really asking, taking a calibrated position, weighing the other side honestly, and deciding. We have broken those moves into ten steps and ordered them the way we teach them, foundations first, the two hardest moves (evaluation and the concession) in the middle, and exam control last. Step 4, evaluation, is the one that separates a competent essay from a distinction one, so give it the most time.
